Exhibition: Marie Antoinette through the Notebook – Marion Manifold:

From 8 September, Geelong Gallery will present Marie Antoinette through the Notebook, a special exhibition from award-winning printmaker, Marion Manifold, which explores female body image and the life of one of the most famous women in history.
This collection of large-scale linocuts originated during a three month residency in Paris where Marion Manifold researched the Notebook of Ladies Attire in the Archives Nationales. The Notebook, which contains fabric swatches, was presented to Marie Antoinette – Queen consort to Louis XVI of France – who pricked the pages with a pin to choose her daily attire.
Using a facsimile of the Notebook and investigating the places and events of Marie Antoinette’s life, including the backdrop of the French Revolution, Marion Manifold has created works that are richly beaded and embroidered, or painted, some with silk-appliqué, in keeping with Marie Antoinette’s luxurious lifestyle.
